Novelist, Playwright

“How did you come up with this story?”

After reading or hearing about Lying in Judgment, my first novel, people often ask, “How did you come up with this story?”

The truth is, this story was inspired by an experience of a friend of mine who was then serving on a jury for a violent crime in Washington, DC.

We were talking at a cocktail party, and he described how the judge had directed the jury to disregard some key and compelling evidence that had just been presented. How could he possibly ignore it, he wondered? How could he put it out of his mind?

I wondered about that question for a long time, and it led me to wonder: what if a juror couldn’t disregard evidence? What if the judge couldn’t even order them to disregard it – because it wasn’t actually presented? … because the juror is the only one that knows? … because he was the one who did it?

The result is the long journey that became Lying in Judgment, which peaked at #21 on the Amazon Kindle best-seller list for mysteries in July 2016, and paved the way for my other novels.

It’s available as an eBook, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook. Check it out!
